"Half Moon Day" by The Stages of Sleep released on July 4th, 2016

July 06, 2016

We're very excited to announce the release of "Half Moon Day" by the Stages of Sleep. Recorded in two weeks at Tamsound and mixed in NYC at Nice One Studio, "Half Moon Day" is the culmination of over a decade of collaboration between Jason Ardiles (song writer, vocalist and guitarist of Stages of Sleep) and Seth Paris (producer, multi instrumentalist, audio engineer and founder of Nice One Audio).  This incredible partnership exemplifies the mission of Nice One Audio & Design: to foster the intimately collaborative relationship between the artist and the producer, in order to create something better than each could accomplish on our own.

The first single from the record is called "July" but be sure to dig deeper to hear Nice One Audio's other favorites, like "Nausea" and "Loneosme House.

This amazing record, completed in less than 8 months, would not have been possible without the incredible talents of:

Dustin Silva- guitarist, vocalist, pianist and sensitive painter of sonic landscapes. Without his soaring guitars, beautiful piano playing and invaluable input on arrangements this record would not be the same. You can reach Dustin here.

Max Savage- audio engineer, master of electronic beats and video producer extraordinaire. Max is known for his work with the band Cathedrals and his fantastic Bay Area based video and audio production company Noisy Savage.

RD White- our fantastic mastering engineer from Twin Peaks Studios in Los Angeles, CA.

Special thanks are also due to Magali Sanscartier (violin), Steven Horgan (drums), Gwendolyn Low (backing vocals), Andrew Byars (cornet and trombone), JJ Byars (wurlitzer and backing vocals), Tony Montalbano (backing vocals), Matt Kursh, Danny Piccione, Steve Boyd, Justin England, Njoki Gitahi (design and backing vocals), Eli Carlton-Pearson, Brian M. Wilkerson and Nicholas Hasty.

Nice One Partners with MoMA Archives

June 24, 2016

We are now providing audio preservation, digitization and metadata management services to the Museum of Modern Art Archives in NYC! The ongoing digitization and preservation work for MoMA's extensive collection represents the cutting edge of audio preservation efforts.

Here's an example of our process for physical cassette preservation. This tape, from the Victor D'Amico papers, arrived at our studio with the tape broken off the hub, felt pad missing and twisted in many places. The tape required rehousing in a new shell, splicing onto a new hub, and hand winding to resolve the twisting issue.

When audio tape twists and flips over the content plays back incorrectly, it makes digitization impossible until the twists are resolved. Instead of hearing the content from Side A you end up getting the content from Side B playing in reverse! This fragile tape required careful handling to identify and resolve the numerous twists without causing any additional physical damage or oxide loss to the tape.

After rehousing the cassette in a new shell and some dizzying un-twisting, we were able to successfully digitize all the audio content.

MantecaSonora

La Mandanga's "Manteca Sonora" released Apr 29

June 15, 2016

Nice One Audio and Design is proud to announce the release of the brand new record "Manteca Sonora" by Bay Area based Spanish rhumba band La Mandanga. Recorded by Seth Paris at Tamsound in Kentfield, CA, the record is proof that these musicians came into the studio locked and loaded. The band performed 11 songs live, including complete vocal takes by leader and song writer Alberto Guiterrez. We added backing vocals, violin, trumpet and additional guitars to the live recordings then mixed at Nice One Studio in NYC. Mastering was handled by our good friend RD at twinpeaksstudios.com.

Take a listen to our favorite track:
